Images in Black : 150 Years of Black Collectibles
by Douglas Congdon-MartinBook
Description
From the years of slavery through the years of civil rights, images of black people
have taken many forms. Some of these images were positive and some negative and
stereotypical. Together they help us see and measure the history of racial attitudes in
America, and make up the growing field of what is called Black Collectibles. These
collectibles help to chronicle an important aspect of American history.
Hundreds of these items are gathered together for Images in Black: 300 Years of Black
Collectibles, and are illustrated in full color. The text helps the reader understand the
history, and the price guide makes the volume useful for evaluating the market in black
collectibles.

Black Americana Postcard
Price Guide : A Century of History Preserved on Postcards
by Joseph L. MashburnBook Description
The first-ever comprehensive Black postcard price guide. It values, lists and
illustrates (with over 550 images) thousands of blacks on postcards from 1893 to 1980 and
contains not only cards from America but also those from all countries in Europe. There
are near complete checklists of hundreds of artists who painted beautiful children and
finely attired adults, of cakewalks and minstrels and comical situations. Shown also are
those that sterotype blacks and use demeaning racial slants and vulgar captions that would
be unthinkable today. The Real Life chapters lists works of hundreds of postcard
publishers who sent their perssonel through the South to photograph black at work and
play. Advertising, Real Photos (some extremely rare that include those that were
politically motivated as well as some of the cruelties of early lynchings and riots),
Sports, Entertainers and Topicals are also covered. Although it illustrates the unpleasant
and difficult times, it also relates the great strides that the African American community
made in their efforts to gain equality. This book is a must for all students of black
history, postcard collectors, and collectors of black ephemera.
